When I was a child there was a fish my brother and I loved, rock. It was really lovely, white flesh, it had a lovely taste and just 1 central bone which was really easy to discard of.  It is perfect for children and people not keen on fish with bones or very fishy fish.  Anyway, when we occasionally had fish and chips (and it was not very often), this is what we would have.

I by and large cook our fish and chips now and so had no thought about rock for years until we went to Cape Town a couple of years back and had fish and chips at fish on the rocks. Rhona had snoek and it really brought memories flooding back of being a child and eating rock.  This lead me down a path of whatever happened to rock?  I can tell you, rock is apparently now endangered and so is not something I can now eat sadly.  But Snoek is so so similar - albeit only available in Africa!

So today Riaan made for us apricot snoek which I think if you are not South African you maybe won't quite get.  A lot of their foods use fruit in mains which personally I absolutely love,  I love everything about South African cuisine actually.  Anyway so butter and apricot jam are put all over the snoek and it is braai'd.  It was SO good, I love coming to SA because we are always spoilt.
