Every now and again it is nice to have just good old English stodge. Today we had toad in the hole with mash and onion gravy. It was really delicious, I do really love mash potatoes and onion gravy. Oh wait, and sausages! And yorkies… not things I have every week or month but when I do I feel like I am being hugged.
The origins of toad in the hole started as a way for poorer households to stretch meat. The original dish would have been leftover meat cooked in batter. The use of the pudding would have made a relatively small amount of meat much more filling. Sausages were not used until much more recently.
However it started, I am so glad it did.
